BTW, the form I used that seems to work for path names in a Cygwin bash
shell under Windows Vista 64 is:

export FG_ROOT="C:\\cygwin\\home\\jon\\FlightGear\\data"
export FG_SCENERY=" C:\\cygwin\\home\\jon\\FlightGear\\scenery"
