The TR1133 was an early 4-channel vhf transceiver for the Royal Air Force
(RAF). It had a metal case that contained the Transmitter and Receiver
units, etc. The TR1133 was fitted to a number of RAF fighter aircraft in
1940. The TR1143 was effectively an improved, production version of the
TR1133 and it went into service a little later- its metal case was the
same size as that for the TR1133, but the Power, Controller and Aerial
connections were brought out on top of the case, instead of at one end,
as with the TR1133. The Power and Controller connectors were now 'W'
plugs and sockets, but the aerial connector was still the same type
as before. The SCR522 4-channel equipment was developed in America
from the TR1143 - it was of the same physical size and had the same
connectors, so that the two sets were interchangeable. However, the
SCR522 had a greater frequency range than the TR1143 - 100 to 156
megacycles per second (Mc/s) as opposed to 100 to 124 Mc/s. In 1944,
vhf equipment was additionally fitted to all Bomber Command aircraft -
TR1143 in No 5 Group aircraft in June, and SCR522 in aircraft of No 1
Group in July.
