It's expected unfortunately - the C172p had areas for 'increase / decrease',
and a few other places do, but most did not.
My personal feeling is that the drag behaviour makes up for this, since it's
easier to pick (just hit any part of the knob), but then make changes in either
direction repeatedly; with the C172 I used to frequently hit the 'wrong' pick
area, especially at smaller screen resolutions.
I did consider trying to detect the (visual) centre of the knob to replicate
this behaviour, but it's complicated if the knob is not 'straight on' to the
camera direction. However, if someone wishes to try, it can be done simply by
changing the code in SGPickAnimation.cxx. If such a system works reliably, it
can certainly be an option.
(That's the good think about centralising the animation - we can experiment /
innovate different UX scenarios trivially for aircraft that use the new style,
without the aircraft developers needing to do anything more)

The starter is a separate pick area beside the knob. I was (and remain)
undecided if making it be part of the knob is a benefit or not.

The should all increase on left-click and decrease on middle (alt) click.
However, individual controls may interpret changing property values different.
It's easy to fix - simple change the <factor> element in the action to a
negative value - but I deliberately left the directions as what I believed they
were already. If they've changed it's an accident and easy to fix.
