If I had to guess, I would say this sounds like a driver problem.

FlightGear perhaps uses a different subset of OpenGL than these other
applications?  Or perhaps consumes more texture resources?  Or it
could be quite a few other things.

I would look for a DRI / driver solution.  In Unix, there is no way a
user space app should be able to hang or crash the machine.  If this
happens it almost certainly has to be a driver or OS (or hardware)
level problem.  Since FG runs fine on other linux systems with
different drivers, I would guess this is either a driver/dri problem
or perhaps a hardware problem.
