Are you sure that non-ATI cards aren't supported? ATI claim they are,
and I have a non-ATI Radeon 8500 here myself that works fine.

Assuming you're running ATI's current crop of drivers (2.5.1) for the
right version of XFree86, my best bet is to try XFree86 3.0, which,
apparently, has accelerated 3D support for these cards. I haven't
tried it myself, though.
I know that the Radeon 9000 can be made to work because I've set one
up (with XFree 4.1.0 and ATI's drivers).
If everything else fails, it could still be down to a hardware issue,
e.g. your power supply not being strong enough.
