Curt - thanks for that - you can see my config.ac at 
http://www.monkeez.co.uk/linux/configure.ac.txt 
I think it's as it should be. 

So, that leaves the autotools. 

When installing them, I unzip them, ./configure && make && make install 
and they seem to work from that. 

Am I missing another stage that I need to do?
