People have made up poems, like

  Red over white, you're alright;
  White over white, you'll fly all night;
  Red over red, you're dead.

In fact, white over white is often fine for small planes, if the VASIS
is calibrated for a 3 degree glide slope. That's a *very* shallow
approach for a 172 or Cherokee and requires carrying a fair bit of
power all the way in -- many (most?) small-plane pilots choose a
steeper glide angle (maybe 5 or 6 degrees) and lower power, so that
they'll have a chance of making the runway if the engine quits on
final. I was at the airport once when that happened to an Arrow, and
the pilot proceeded to make an entirely uneventful landing. If he had
come in on a 3 degree glide slope, he would have had to set down in a
parking lot or on a (heavily forested) golf course.

All the best,

David
