Well, I should have checked this out before replying.

I looked in the config.log file, and found
"--libdir=/usr/lib".

In /usr/lib I did "ln -s
/usr/local/lib/libopenal.so.0.0.7 libopenal.so.0" and
now the program works!!! 

Thanks for your help, Frederic, your suggestion to
look in config.log was what did the trick.
