thanks again.  in the 3d panel I couldn't get the knob to do anything but by toggling the 2d panel I was able to hear the morse code.  Just two more minor questions.  I've been visiting navfltsm.addr.com which is a great place to learn about navigation although it's based on MSFS. I've been following some of the training flights and I see that the timer is very important.  How do I reset to 0 at the specified turns/stations?  Also, can any of the instruments be changed from the keyboard?  since I use the mouse to fly the plane, if I click out of the control mode to get the pointer  to spin the dial, the plane drifts in wind/turbulence and messes up the heading.

But it sure is fun!

There is a little knob next to the three letters 'NAV' with 'OFF', 'LI', 'HI'.
Turning it to 'LO' or 'HI' you should hear the Morse code (just different
sinus frequencies for hearing pleasure ;-)).

in touch with them?

Not necessarily, depending on distance you are leaving their range anyway.
Usually you use the second NAV for cross bearings to estimate your position
(intersection of 2 VOR radials).

Anyway you should dial ILS frequencies into NAV1, because (at least in the
default C172) NAV2 has no glide slope indicator (the horizontal bar).
