It turned out to be a non-event.  I downloaded all the CVS sources, 
including plib, and simply specified --prefix=/usr/local.  I made 
especially sure that those libs that expect plib in /usr/lib had the 
correct switch to point to the plib libs at /usr/local during the 
configure.

Everything compiled sweetly and FG runs well.
