This sounds like you need to calibrate the js. To calibrate:

  $ jscal -c /dev/input/js0

And after that you can dump a calibration script that you best call
whenever booting the system or starting fgfs:

  $ jscal -p /dev/input/js0 > js-calibrate.sh

Don't expect the -t option to work. In case you don't have jscal, it's
available here (together with jstest):

Check out the "ruby" module -- the jscal source code is in ruby/utils/.
