Hi Douglas, I've seen such a thing (not a flight simulator, but the film of a flight) at the Linuxtag in Karlsruhe, Germany, this week on the brand new Cell processor. They are doing not mapping but ray tracing of such images on a 3 ground. Ray tracing is the point. I've never seen such a good result, it would be a real earthquake in the world of flight simulators. With 2 Cells processors (Linux 2.6.12), the tracing is made real time 40 fps, with a high resolution (I'm not sure, I believe in the 1280*1024). The ray tracing is made real time, directly then exported to jpeg, and displayed on the screen. It is HUGE. From the sky we could see each car, even with its shadow!!!! If such a thing would come into flightgear, it would make it the killer app. I've no screenshot for the moment, maybe someone here has.
