how do you know you're not just outside their cone of light??? approach lights 
do not have an omnidirectional pattern in real life, they are basically 
headlights with a parabolic reflector... if you come up to them from the 
rear, you can't see them, it isn't until you get round the front and in the 
beam that you can see them... The whole point of approach lights is that they 
can be seen from a great distance by aircraft that are on the approach...
