Probably partly due to the fact NVidia cards are more widely used and therefore software is better tested on NVidia. I'm now on XOrg, but ran 0.9.8 on XFree without problems. My box, details as above, is probably not much more powerful than yours but runs FG fine, with frame rates generally in the mid-high 20s IIRC. At a guess, I would say your problems might be graphics related. What colour depth are you running at? Screen resolution? You can't find a cheap NVidia card to compare with?
