Having looked at the driver code, I'm suspecting bad hardware somewhere...

If your joystick was identified correctly, your drivers are all OK (although 
as I said previously, don't pass any joystick-related options to 
snd_via82xx).

Your main error is returned because the sidewinder driver is getting too many 
consecutive bad packets and has had to re-initialize too many times.  You 
could adjust that limit easily, but I doubt it would really help if the error 
is always thrown quickly.

Have you checked the obvious (good physical connections / cable integrity 
etc)?  Can you find another stick (pref. an bog standard analogue one) to 
plug in and check your gameport is functioning as it should?

I've always found jscal and jstest to be the most useful and effective 
calibration and testing programs.
