Thanks for the reply to my question. I found the config files but there was no output from the logging; maybe it crashed too soon. I have a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200 video card (according to the WinXP device manager). Maybe if I get a chance later, I'll boot the computer from a live Linux disk and see if it agrees about that.
Seems like your system specs maybe to low for FG 9.8. I am using a FX5200 and it is just enough. If you could also tell us cpu speed and amount of ram that would help to.
