If you're looking for a convenient way to have lots of specialized hotkeys for FlightGear (or anything else), consider investigating the "Belkin Nostromo Speedpad n52". I use mine for CAD, Excel, Word, FlightGear and anything else I can think of that would benefit from having more 'speedkeys'.
Out of the box, the unit is designed to rest under your left palm. It's very comfortable for me and my fingers fall easily to the keys. You can program the keys to substitute for complex key presses, or actually make complex macros of key sequences. Amazon.com sells this for $30 USD.
