Yes, I figured you had to do something like that :)  I think it would be 
impossible to hand-fly into refueling position, change views and hit F3 while 
still in refueling position.

The refueling envelope is still set pretty loose.  You can use an instrument 
similar to the "refuel.xml" instrument in the T-38 model to give a visual 
indication of the refueling envelope.  It just checks the property:

<property>/systems/refuel/contact</property>
 <value>true</value>


I think it best to keep the envelope loose.  Refueling is not easy, and it's 
even harder in the sim.  Also, there is only one envelope defined, and it is 
for any refueler- KC-10, KC-135, KA-6, and many others, so an accurate 
envelope would be impractical.  Also, making contact with the drogue (or 
boom) will look weird, because in real life the drogue follows the receiver 
aircraft around as he moves within the envelope.  This would be very 
difficult to model realistically.
