Really? I can't think of a reason why modern OpenGL accellerators take longer to display transparnet textures than solid ones (except of a harmless hardware optimized blending function). I'd guess that having the fence throwing a shadow would be a much greater frame rate hit. I also wonder if fences couldn't be automatically inserted as TerraGear already knows the exact shape of an airport...
