Thanks for your reply below - which helped a little. 'fraid you're going to have to really spell it out in words of one syllable though.
 
I've downloaded the archive file onto a memory stick at the moment whereas, Flightgear is fully installed on my pc. When I try and open the archive file, I get the window asking what I'd like to open it with - that's the first problem.
 
The second problem is that I don't know how to extract or what you mean by extract. Is this what I would call unzipping using something like Winzip?
