I think I found an instance of this problem.

In 747-base.xml there is this statement:
 <sim>
[...]
  <sound>
   <path>Aircraft/747/747-sound.xml</path>
   <volume>
      <gear type="double">0.4</gear>
   </volume>
  </sound>
[...]
 </sim>

This turns 'sim/sound/volume' into a property path instead of a property
node, effectively killing the sound.  Who is in charge of the 747?
