Thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions: I've simply had too little time lately to even contemplate looking at my computer at home, let alone turning it on.
When I get the chance I will check: Clearance around CPU, clearance around graphics card, heat of hard drive(s) while running, and the X server logs. I will also try and flog the system with other programs and see if I can verify that load locks. I believe that my power supply is strong enough: It came with the case, the case has four optical drive bays. Having said that, I will try and check its ratings and get an informed opinion. I will check air movement around the case, and possibly get an extra fan for the case (more power drain...) I would be interested if anyone could confirm whether or not the aircraft I mentioned as suspect in my first email (BF109G, P51D, Beech 1900D) definitely or not require more GPU/CPU processing than the safe ones (Hurricane, Spitfire, Seafire, A4Skyhawk, Piper Commanche). Looking at the Seafire and Skyhawk, my suspicion is no, but that's a completely uninformed suspicion!
