How brave are you with software versions?

I use:

Debian testing/Etch. If you have broadband, or even dial-up and lots
of patience, don't bother with stable: Get the up-to-date advantage of
testing. In reality, although you are slightly more likely to
encounter bugs, you can ignore the risk. I used testing for years on
dialup, and worked around the update downloads.

FlightGear CVS. This requires using Simgear from CVS as well. Not an
issue, after the first check-out. Update at least once a week. If you
have decent hardware, compiling doesn't take too long.

The only thing you need to remember is that, although SimGear is first
cousin to FlightGear, the default compiler flags are inadequate. You
need to run 'configure --with-jpeg-factory' for SimGear, in order to
correctly compile FlightGear. Everything else was foolproof.

The first time you compile anything on Debian, you will discover what
development packages you are missing, and may do 'apt-get install
*****-dev' quite a lot. If you don't have any experience chasing down
software versions, install the Debian version of FlightGear/SimGear
and be happy with that. But get the CVS versions and walk through the
learning curve anyway, the thrill of catching updates is worth it!

The only other thing I can say is: I have been using self-compiled
kernels for far too long to know what is in the default Debian kernel!
It is possible, though unlikely, that you will need to roll your own
kernel to get joysticks etc. working. This, however, is _extremely_
unlikely.
