Many people have had this, or similar problems, with both the ATI and nVidia cards. There is a patch floating around somewhere that reverts a line in the rendering code, and I'm told it improves night frame rates quite a bit, without noticeable degradation of quality. Someone here or on IRC can point you to it. On the other hand, getting a simulation application like FlightGear to work on a laptop is bound to be risky business.
