You just have to plan ahead and buy a laptop that is designed to run 
applications like FlightGear.  If you run out and buy some $495 special 
at a place like CompUSA or Best Buy you could very likely run into 
problems running graphically intense apps like FlightGear.

Or if you buy from any other manufacturer, just make sure it comes with 
a high end graphics chip in it.  Usually if it comes with good graphics 
hardware, the manufacturer will make a clear point of it, and probably 
charge you a little more.  If the graphics chipset and specs are kind of 
glossed over in the system description, then that would be a big red 
flag to proceed very carefully with that particular system.
