Hi David,
 I suggest you don't get scary about the way Blender works. It really is 
not very easy at first, UI needs you to learn a couple of tricks before 
you start working with it. But, after a very little time spent on 
learning, you will use a very powerfull tool, much "nicer" than many 
other tools around. I am not a fan of Blender either but I assure you 
it's a precious and very flexible tool, very well suited to building 3d 
stuff for FlightGear.

Anyway, an alternative tool is AC3D, which is the default tool for 
dealing with .ac files of course.
