I would suggest remapping the models when needed before even trying to
repainting them. Some aircrafts do have very basic UV mapping.
Repainting those ones would be a pain the @... Often times it's much
more usefull redesigning the UV mapping first. Paint kits based on bad
UV mappings is worse then having just one single paint scheme.
If you prefer concentrating on repainting, I'd suggest you first try and
contact someone other who could help you in the UV mapping for you.
I don't say every FGFS airplane have bad UVs, but a lot shure do. I
guess that's because the modellers have been much more concentrated on
other (more flight related) simulation details then the look.
Pay attention. Consider contacting the airplane model creators and
propose them a new UV scheme before going on with the repainting. And
ask them if they plan changing the 3d model in a short term, otherwise
your work will be lost after a few re-release.
