I agree with that. Some aircraft are difficult to repaint, because
the layout of the uv-mapping is awkward. I can do OK with uv-mapping
in Blender, but would prefer it if I could get away with Gimping the
textures, instead of creating a new model which is essentially what
happens when the uv-mapping is altered.

UV mapping is indeed a fine art, although I have to say that after
a few months losing hair over Blenders uv-map editor I now reckon
I've got it to a fine art, and its quite simple to work with.

Its a pity we cannot import terrain into Blender, for touch-ups...
