Thanks so much for your reply. Throttle works OK now. A README file that came with the FlightGear package that I installed from the Fedora yum repository led me astray. File /usr/share/doc/FlightGear-0.9.10/README.running says, in part:
while holding down the left mouse button, push the mouse cursor up until the engine is at full power Since I have only a 2-button mouse, I never tried the "middle" button after reading this. Other FlightGear documentation says to use NumLock for keyboard control, so that the keypad '9' key is used when I hit the 'PagUp' key for the throttle.
