I had a similiar problem one time. Have you done anything with your 
joysticks.xml file in  /data ?  This is what mine looks like. Im using a 
custom file I keep in local.  You will have to figure out what your OS 
identifies your stick as 0 or 1.  If you get it wrong it won't crash but your 
stick won't work.  This may stop FG from searching so hard for your stick 
that it crashes before it decides on default but that is just off the top of 
my head for never having figured anything better.
