The full screen crash seems like some kind of X sever or video card problem.
fgfs --geometry=WxH might work better than full screen or game mode.
Try fgfs --geometry=800x600 or fgfs --geometry=1024x768
>From the command line fgfs --show-aircraft will list the aircraft installed

fgfs --aircraft=some-installed-aircraft-name will start FlightGear using that
aircraft. fgfs --aircraft=p51d as an example. If you have the P51
installed.
