Yes, after more research, I found out this is the problem.  Supposedly 
the later freeglut 2.4.0-3 and later were SUPPOSED to fix this backward 
compatibility problem.  Obviously not.

Is there a procedure somewhere to install freeglut 2.2.0?  I had all 
this working before in some manner, but can't find any trace of freeglut 
2.2.0
now.  (I have this vague recollection that all I had to do was create a 
symbolic link for freeglut 2.2.0 to the 2.4.0 library.  I wish I'd 
written down the details when I got it to work.  I will try that.)
