Hello Daniel,
To start flightgear with a different aircraft you need to specify
"--aircraft=<name of a/c here>" in flightgears command-line. I'm not running
Ubuntu or Gnome, so I'm not sure how you change the startup syntax for Gnome
menu items, but that is where you will need to either change the option, or add
it. Of course you will also need to have some different a/c installed, and use
the correct name on the command-line. Browse the flightgear data folder on your
system, and in the "Aircraft" folder see what sub-folders exist. I'm hoping the
Ubuntu packagers have included more a/c than just the c172, so if you see
several folders with different names including one named "c172" and/or "c172p"
then you're in luck. Note the folder names (ie, "737-300"), then add or change
your command-line to show "--aircraft=737-300", or whichever a/c you want to
fly. Start flightgear, and your chosen a/c should load. Unfotunately flightgear
cannot change a/c once it is running.
Other useful command-line options are "--airport=" and "--runway=". The one for
airport takes the 4-digit ICAO code for an airport (in uppercase ie. YBBN,
NZCH, EHAM), and the runway one takes 2 or 3-digit runway designator (ie, 01,
32L, 12, 16R, letters in uppercase again). Default included scenery I think is
KSFO (San Francisco International) and surrounding area, plus TNCM (Princess
Juliana Airport in the Carribean sea) and surrounds. Any other parts of the
world will require you to download the scenery from flightgear.org or a mirror.

Subject: [Flightgear-users] FLIGHTGEAR and UBUNTU Linux 9.04
Hi everybody,
I installed the FLIGHTGEAR package from within UBUNTU "Add-Remove" option. Now,
I start FLIGHTGEAR but all I get is the CESSNA 172 default aircraft. I have no
option for opening other aircrafts. I can't see any option in the menu either.
Any suggestions ???
