My personal opinion is that it's fine to sell a distribution of FlightGear.
A person could go about this process in a constructive, transparent, and
cooperative way, or they could go about it in a self serving negative way.
One recent case was discussed here in great detail, and I think what got
most people upset is that this particular seller does everything he can to
obfuscate the fact that what he is selling is flightgear. This isn't
illegal, but it's not constructive and it doesn't breed good will with the
FlightGear community. This same individual suggested they wanted to give a
monthly monetary award to some developer, but as far as I'm aware, they have
never actually followed through with this.
On the other hand, if someone sold a distribution of FlightGear in an open
way the clearly stated what was being sold is FlightGear (and perhaps
provided something that is value added and interesting) and on top of that,
actively participated in helping the development community in various ways
... I think that would generally be very well received among our community.
In your case, it sounds like you are using FlightGear as part of a larger
product and are probably targeting a very specific market that is interested
in your hybrid product, not just FlightGear by itself. So I think as long
as you are up front and transparent about what you are doing, and as long as
you follow the terms of the GPL, I don't think there is any problem with
including FlightGear as part of your product.
Best regards,
Curt.
