Hi,

All available evidence points to your graphics card driver not being
properly installed (or has been disturbed by the installation of some
other software). Have you tried reinstalling the driver?

On my Debian system where I use the reference driver from Nvidia installed
outside the package system this usually happens every time the Xorg
packages have been updated. IIRC the conflict might be as small as a
symlink being redirected but I always reinstall the Nvidia driver
anyway since that is a quick and easy operation and also fetches the most
uptodate driver version.

Cheers,

Anders
