..to rule out hardware problems, try put Knoppix on a CD, DVD
or an usb key and boot it up. Once you have it running, set
root's password, then open a 'root terminal' and issue the
following command line commands: "aptitude update; aptitude \
install flightgear ;aptitude clean", then simply go pick
"FlightGear" in the games menu.

..if you wanna keep FG on your install across reboots, you need
to install onto an usb key or on a disk, the above command line
suggestion then becomes: "aptitude update; aptitude upgrade ; \
aptitude clean ;aptitude install flightgear ;aptitude clean".
