I had a weird one here once where audio refused to work, and the best I
could get were some random clicks out of my speakers. I wasted at least 2
evenings on fruitless google searches and tearing my hair out. In the end,
it turned out I needed to powercycle the whole thing -- I had been
rebooting and resettting endlessly, but apparently never mixed in a
complete power cycle. As soon as I did that the motherboard audio came
back and worked fine. I know the problem could be 100 million different
things include actual real hardware problems, but might be worth a shot.

Back in the days before every motherboard had audio hardware on it, I used
to run sound blaster cards for audio. So I bet there must be plug in cards
or even usb that would be a lot cheaper than a new motherboard.

Good luck,

Curt.
