Mesa OpenGL is a software implementation of OpenGL -- I doubt it will run
FlightGear fast enough on any hardware to be useful, and it may not have
support for all the advanced shaders we are using???  Typically you need to
install the hardware accelerated drivers for your video card, even on
linux.  That said, I've always stuck with nvidia graphics hardware here so
I don't know what is specifically required for a radeon card or what issues
you might run into.  Caution Arnt may troll about open-source video drivers
and groklaw endlessly, but I've never heard that he got FlightGear running
reasonably on purely open-source drivers.  On the other hand, my experience
is with nvidia so I may not be much help here either.
