This might be the point where it's worth compiling a few other opengl
programs or demos and seeing if they can run -- you might discover a
wider scale setup problem on your system (or not, but it might not
hurt to step back and just do a quick system sanity check to make
sure your chasing the right problem.)

Curtis Olson:
as an amd/ati user, i got those messages when i mess my card driver
and linux (debian SID here) start with the basic driver for the card.
I can't tell if it happens with the "radeon" driver or an other, but
in this case "glxinfo" give very short information, telling me that i
don't have 3D accel IIRC .
depending your graphic card, you can try the fglrx closed source
driver, or fglrx-legacy (for card before hd5XXX, the support for
hd4XXX and below dropped in the fglrx driver some months ago).
my 2 cents,

I have no trouble with NVidia cards.
The support for AMD/ATI cards has been a bit murky as AMD drops support
for certain older cards.
My 4 year old laptop which has a radeon card used to fail starting X
about 2 years ago and I had to build the radeonhd driver.
After some months the driver in openSUSE started working again.
I have never tried fgfs on a box with the radeon chip so I don't know if
it works.

Sid.
