They're completely different. A 95th percentile deals with data rates,
but netflow measures the amount of data downloaded.
95th percentile data from MRTG is not really going to be an accurate
indication of throughput, for various reasons:
* it's usually sampled at a 5-minute interval. This is far too large for
a decent 95th-percentile measurement.
* The consolidation used on MRTG can sometimes mask what is really going
on. In order to get an accurate picture over a period of a month or so,
you need to keep all of your samples, rather than consolidating them
into smaller samples as MRTG does, which ends up being a lot of data.
We use a combination of the two technologies - a 95th percentile of SNMP
polls to customer endpoints for calculating bandwidth, and netflow data
for actual amount of data downloaded. Seems to work quite well. Our SNMP
polls are far more frequent than 5 minutes, though.

Subject: [Flow-tools] billing from netflow data?
Hi all,
Does anyone do that? We currently just have the mrtg 95th percentile
hack, and I really can't verify it's accuracy.
We've got the same data in flows, anyone run across a tool to pull usage
data easily for a specific IP and/or interface? Right now I'm just
arguing with an upstream that is showing about 10Mb/s more usage than
what
we're measuring...
Thanks,
Charles
