Chasing up on Greg's earlier suggestion (that '\n' were probably a bad idea
in the menu string) I've posted a revised version that constructs the menu
a bit more sensibly. (Posted as bad-menu-3.cxx above.)

However, that still manifests the fault as before, so despite the fact
that my code was bad, that doesn't seem to be the underlying issue...

Next, I tried Greg's recipe for properly installing Chinese text support
on XP. I think that Greg reports that for him that entirley fixed the
problem.

For me, it means I no longer have to explicitly set a Chinese capable font
(XP seems to pick one for me - but it seems to be substantially slower
doing so than when I set a font explicitly.)

But... I can still produce the failure mode, so maybe setting up Windows
properly to support the languages used is not the whole story?
