Hmm, that's what I expected, but it doesn't explain the effect (only that
redrawing does do its work).

Same here.

I'm sorry to say that I can't help you. Since Greg and I can't replicate
the effect, it looks much like a problem with your setup/OS or so, but
maybe someone else has an idea.
