OK, I accept that I didn't have the latest VisualC++ V6.0 service packs
loaded.
So this afternoon, I had some time on my hands and decided to do a check
on my Desktop machine which runs Windows XP SP2.

I installed MS Visual Studio from scratch (All of it so I didn't leave
anything out).
I then downloaded the most recent SP, which happens to be SP6.
Fortunately, there was a single combined download containing an aggregate
of all the Service Packs.
I then installed SP6.

I re-installed fltk-1.30rc3 plus the patch to Fl_Text_Display.cxx

Everything was exactly as I reported before.
Although I noted that the solution I applied to fltk_images.dsp should
have been in fltk_jpeg.dsp (see Abrecht's post on dependencies)

The warning regards beta version is in WINDOWS.H in the VisualC++
installation. I can only assume that the interface didn't change and they
forgot to modify the headers in one of the Service Packs.
I've tried to find updated headers, but can't find anything on the
Microsoft MSDN site.

So as far as I can see,
1) VisualC++ V6 (plus SP6) cannot handle environment variables in output
path names.
2)fltk_jpeg.dsp and fltk_jpegdll.dsp have an incorrect dependency on fltk
