It seems like the variable you set makes it hide the next character, not the current one. And what's the deal with the Shift keys? The bug in my patch is that it assumed that Xutf8LookupString() would always return nothing for intermediate stages. This is wrong, and the obvious fix is to clear out the buffer whenever XFilterEvent() returns true.
