I had originally written quite a bit more, but realized
no one will read a looong standards doc, so I'm trying
to keep it short, non-rambly, and 'approachable' like
Mike's original doc.
Unfortunately, I have a hard time keeping things terse.
I write to reason stuff out, then have to go back and
trim it down, sometimes forgetting bits :/
