Yes - but ASCII is just UTF8... Just a very little part of it!

What I meant was the changes to handle UTF8 in the text rendering (all
fltk text rendering, not just the text editor) is slower now because of
the need to be aware of and support UTF8.

The text editor is particularly bad because it has a nasty habit of
re-rendering far too much text, often the whole file, which amplifies
the problem.

If we can persuade it to only re-render a little bit, things may get
better?

But I don't understand the nedit code at all, so...
