I had imagined that it would be feasible (and relatively
easy
using Roman's PostScript backend as a template) to write
a PDF
backend that would use the excellent PDFlibLite (usable
without restriction for open source software, but no UTF
support).

Are there other solutions you know about ?
None specifically besides Cairo; I've normally rolled my own,
however...
I'd be wary of introducing another lib dependency for this, even if
PDFlibLite were licensed in a compatible way (which I'm not sure that it
is given fltk's static linking exceptions..)
If PS output works, is that good enough? I think it probably is... But
then, I'm not the one doing the good work here.
