But people do do that, all the time.  There are a lot of problems that
are theoretically non-problems if everyone would just configure the
same, but people don't do that.

Since you mentioned python, python standards reject mixed tabs and
spaces.  There's even a compiler flag to make them into errors.  I
have ts=8 in vim but get annoyed at them anyway because they make
cursor movement unpredictable.

When there are no benefits (I can't think of any at least...) to
mixing tabs with spaces, and when it's so easy to configure editors to
insert spaces, why do it?
