FLTK 2 has code to draw antialiased fonts as textures in OpenGL. It 
relies on FreeType but it could be altered to create the textures in 
other ways on other platforms.

I very much recommend this code be back-ported to the current fltk 1 and 
you can get rid of the need for xlib fonts entirely.
