        Not sure how we use this, but if it's just to allocate string buffers
        in FLTK, I'm thinking we should always use the larger value.

        In other words, regardless of the OS limitations; we should handle
        long pathnames correctly; let the OS fail with 'pathname too long'
        if it can't handle it.
